ROTARY is a 35mm slide projected magazine. It was originally produced for The AV Studio exhibition in Bath. In collaboration with Jack Maxwell.
The brief for the exhibition was for each of the 14 exhibitors to acquire an item that would have been sold or seen in an audio visual shop, and use this item as a starting point to produce a graphic design project. Rotary was a collaboration between two of the exhibitors, Luke Archer and Jack Maxwell, because of this we had two items; a Rank Hylite ‘Rotary Magazine’ slide carousel and 200 miscellaneous 35mm slides from Ebay. The idea was to combine the two items; place the slides in the carousel and project them, in order create something new. We had no idea what would be on the miscellaneous slides, which made it all the more challenging and interesting.
Through the editing and selection of the miscellaneous Ebay slides, and the design of new slides, the ‘pages’ of the magazine were created. The format gives an alternative browsing experience to a conventional printed magazine, because of the size and unique quality of a slide projection and because of the situation it is viewed in; a dark room. The viewer is in control of the slide remote, allowing them to appreciate the magazine at a pace that suited them.
